Zephyranthes atamasco has white flowers which take on more of their prized red cast as each day passes after they bloom. Also often called "rain lily," this North Carolina wildflower is found in sunny, moist, wild areas from the coast to the mountains.
Atamasco, the species name, is derived from an Indian word that means "stained with red". It grows from a poisonous underground bulb. Yet I find that the flowers sometimes have a subtle, sweet fragrance.
In a sense, Atamasco fights its way up out of the mud. From adversity, then, arises a sweet flower of considerable beauty.
May your own struggles mature into something of equal beauty in 2007.
