In a letter to the editor of several North Carolina newspapers, the pastor of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan speaks the simple truth in response to Republican incumbent Liddy Dole's "Godless" ads:
Kay Hagan, a U.S. Senatorial candidate, has been an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro for almost 30 years. She is a ruling elder, is involved in a small group bible study, taught Sunday School, has participated in mission trips, served on our Prison Ministry Board, and various other ministry teams of the church. I know Kay and have worked with her. She is a person of sincere Christian faith.
A recent TV political advertisement suggests Kay Hagan is a "Godless American" and portrays her saying through a voiceover "There is no God." I am compelled to say this portrayal is untrue.
If I were the pastor of Elizabeth Dole, I would also feel obliged to set the record straight if political opponents called her a "Godless American" and falsely portrayed her as saying "There is no God."
This is not a partisan issue. First Presbyterian Church is a congregation made up of faithful Christian men and women who are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, many having served in local, state and national political offices. God's politics are about seeking and serving the common good. I believe it is for the common good to know what is true and false about Kay Hagan's faith.
