Five religion-related questions for Palin
There is a video clip of an October 2005 sermon in which Kenyon pastor Thomas Muthee, while visiting the Wasilla Assembly of God, calls upon God to "invade" several sectors of secular society.
Muthee also blesses then Mayor Sarah Palin's ambitions for higher office -- she was elected governor of Alaska a year later.
As Wake Forest University Divinity School visiting professor Melissa Rogers explains:
Muthee then calls Palin to the front of the sanctuary and prays over and with her, along with others from the congregation. Palin referenced this event in her now famous remarks at the Wasilla Assembly of God in early 2008.
Rogers believes (and I agree) that the matter raises five serious questions that Palin, as a candidate for vice president of the United States, should answer:
- Do you believe, as Rev. Muthee seemed to suggest, that public schools are currently teaching children "how to worship Buddha [and] how to worship Mohammed," and that public school curricula teach "witchcraft and sorcery"?
- Do you agree with Rev. Muthee's suggestion that the Ten Commandments have been "kicked out" of our public schools? If so, what should judges and other governmental officials do about that?
- Do you agree with Rev. Muthee's sentiment that God needs to "tak[e] over our education system"? If so, what do you mean by that?
